MeRT vs. TMS: What’s the Difference?

MeRT and TMS are closely related, but they are not simply two names for the same treatment.

Both use non-invasive magnetic stimulation of the brain. The principal difference is that MeRT incorporates EEG-derived information and analysis to help individualize the stimulation protocol.

Understanding that distinction can help patients ask better questions when considering treatment.

What Is Traditional TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) uses a magnetic coil placed outside the head to deliver magnetic pulses to targeted areas of the brain. Traditional TMS typically follows a common, standardized treatment protocol with little variation from one patient to another.

TMS does not require brain surgery or an implanted electrode, and patients generally remain awake during treatment.

TMS devices have received FDA clearance for specific indications, including Major Depressive Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

What Is MeRT?

MeRT — Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy — incorporates TMS technology but adds EEG-based assessment and analysis to the treatment-planning process.

Brainwave information is recorded and analyzed before an individualized stimulation protocol is developed.

MeRT vs. TMS at a Glance

Traditional TMS

• Uses non-invasive magnetic stimulation
• Targets selected areas of the brain
• Uses established treatment parameters
• Does not normally require individualized EEG analysis as the basis for treatment planning
• Has FDA-cleared applications for specific conditions and devices

MeRT

• Uses non-invasive magnetic stimulation
• Includes EEG-based assessment
• Incorporates individual brainwave information
• Uses that information to help personalize the stimulation protocol
• The MeRT System has FDA clearance for PTSD

Why Does MeRT Use EEG?

An EEG records electrical activity generated by the brain.

MeRT uses this information as another component of treatment planning.

The underlying concept is straightforward: two people can have the same clinical diagnosis without necessarily having identical patterns of brain activity.

MeRT therefore attempts to incorporate information specific to the individual rather than relying exclusively on a standardized treatment protocol.

Does Insurance Cover TMS and MeRT?

MeRT is a more personalized approach to TMS therapy. While traditional TMS generally follows a standardized treatment protocol, MeRT uses EEG and clinical information to help individualize treatment for each patient.

If your insurance covers TMS therapy and you meet your plan’s coverage requirements, you may receive our personalized MeRT approach without an additional charge for the personalization.

Our team will verify your insurance benefits and TMS coverage before treatment begins.
